Musty Smell Coming From Gas Fireplace

Hi everyone, for the past couple of months I’ve been trying to figure out where a musty smell has been coming from in the living room. Smells like an old couch that may have had something spilled on it. Would come and go but we could never figure out what it was. Finally got determined to figure it out and found that it’s coming from the gas fire place opening. It’s not natural gas smell. Any thought on how to get rid of it or what to check for?

most likely a bird died in the chimney

You might be getting water in the wall where the chimney meets the roofline.

If this in Louisiana, there has been no rain in a long time.
Sounds like something died in there.
Maybe you can get a mirror and light and look up above the flue and see something? Be careful, lots of soot in there.

OP shouldn't have a lot of soot in a gas fireplace, especially if they've had it swept in the last few years.

Go up in the attic (early morning) and look where the roof meets the chimney and see if you see any rot

Also climb on the roof and see if there are any holes or rot in the chimney walls above the roof. On our prior house we had some defective recalled sided that had rotted and birds just pecked holes through it and were nesting inside the framed chimney area. They could be peeing and pooping inside there.

Update. New house for us so really wasn’t paying attention when I first posted. There actually isn’t a chimney or any sort of vent out of the house. It’s just one of those unvented heaters that looks like a fireplace. All I can think is maybe it’s really dirty
