I love the over the top obnoxious molding and hate the first pic.

That's me. Our great room has 5 pc built-up crown with egg and dart at the top and bottom which is 14" tall. Instead of dating a house I think it makes it timeless because OOT millwork has been around since the Victorian era in homes. It reminds me of suit lapel widths, a 3-4" lapel will always look fine narrow and wide lapels go in and out of style and date themselves.

i think this also depends on the style of the house as well. our house isn't a classic southern house with a big wrap around porch where all that trim looks correct; its a contemporary house with a flat roof built on the side of a hill. i think the trim has to fit the 'mood' of the house and i was trying to mimic the minimalism of the exterior.

in any case, we've sorted it out. we're going to go with simple trim on the outsides of those openings (to match other interior openings) and the square trim we're using around the doors and windows in our kitchen on the kitchen side of the opening. keeping it simple.
