Looking for tips on applying some kind of tape/barrier on a door to prevent dog

from scratching.
It’s an interior bedroom door made from cheap wood/particle board. I’ve tried duct tape and a few others, but he just peels it off or claws right through it.
Any suggestions on something I can apply to prevent him from cutting his paws while also strewing sharp shards of wooden splinters all over the place?

Best answer is to put the dog in a crate until you can address why he is trying to break out.
Otherwise, maybe drill on a piece of plexiglass or HDPE (available at home Depot/Lowes)

Check on Amazon. They have Claw Guard and other options.

He’s old and gets freaked out by loud noises (especially thunder). So every time it rains and we’re not home, he goes nuts. Crates don’t work cause he’ll rub his nose raw trying to get out, plus shite everywhere.

Got it. Don't be afraid of pharmaceutical help for his anxiety. He is legit scared. Ask your vet about Sileo or trazadone.

We have trazadone, but it only mildly helps. He still freaks out really bad, even while heavily drugged (and we absolutely hate seeing him look loopy and all drugged-out). Plus, random thunderstorms pop-up all the time in Florida, and there’s no way to time them by giving him traz 3 hours early

I'm having the same issue now. He's a 13 yo lab and just in the past year or two has started getting bad anxiety about weather and rain. He had never chewed/tore up anything inside then randomly shredded every closed door in the house while we were at work during a thunderstorm. I considered putting something over the doors but was worried he would just try to go through walls. I started crating him and he turned the crate in to a pile of bent metal. I bought a new crate and now give him Ace when there is rain on the forecast. He's a really great dog other than his anxiety during bad weather.

Same here. Never used to happen until the past year or so…..been steady getting worse unfortunately. And he’s a great dog in every aspect other than this as well. Can’t even fault him or get mad either, he’s not acting up or misbehaving, he’s just completely terrified.

Yup. I have to sleep on the floor with him when it gets bad at night. It's honestly kind of impressive how much damage he can do to a door. There's claw marks in the solid wooden frame next to one of the doors like a bear had done it.
I can't think of anything to put over a door that wouldn't put him at a higher risk for injury.

Consider asking your vet for an alternative to ace. We now know that while ace will reduce their physical reactions, it does nothing to actually calm them. They are basically still terrified just can't do anything about it :(
Sileo does wonders for noise reactivity , as does clonidine or trazadone.

damn, didn't realize that. Will definitely look in to it. Thanks for the heads up. I'd asked them before if there were anything different that didn't leave him hungover and they told me that ACE was the best for thunderstorms.
ETA: Just spoke with my vet about other options. Waiting on a call back to see what's what. Didn't realize that Ace was pretty much a chemical straight jacket.

Even on hollow core doors there is real wood around the edges, try to screw into that. Also when you go across the middle, there are anchors you can get for those(similar to drywall anchors) however i would make sure to screw as many as I could into the edges as that will have the most holding power.
