Liquid Fertilizer

I have over 44k sqft of centipede that is still recovering from the builders neglect it suffered so there are some thin spots. It also contained a high number of weeds from the sod farm. Being that it's centipede I don't want to always "baby" it but I think it is going to need some help for a few seasons to fill in.

I have a 21 gallon tow-behind sprayer that I use for my herbicides and preemergents so I would like to utilize that instead having to store a big spreader as well.

Anyone have recommendations on liquid fertilizer and iron supplements? I would be ok buy separate N and K liquids too if needed. What sort of challenges should I be cautious of if I go this route?

Thanks!

Most liquid formulations won’t be very concentrated so they won’t be cost effective for anything other than micro nutrients. Other than the storage of a spreader you are much better off with dry fertilizer.

Maybe look into MEEN GREEN fertilizer from Mossy Oak Biologic. I personally have never used it, but it appears to be similar to Miracle Grow. It says a 5 pound bag covers an acre. I it has the the mixing ratio on the website, and it is like $20 for 5 pounds.

For liquid fertilizer where you want just the nitrogen, you can get straight urea, dissolve it in water and then spray.

However a couple of things: usually the concentration of nitrogen/1000sq ft is fairly low vs what you would normally apply via granular application (0.1-0.2 lbs/1000 vs 0.5-1lb/1000). This is somewhat to prevent from burning your yard. This means that most people doing spray applications of nitrogen are doing it more often. So you typically just see people who are "baby-ing" their lawn as the ones who do these spray applications.

With that said, doing liquid spray of fertilizer can offer the advantage of doing multiple things at one time ....micronutrients/iron, insectides etc.

Ultimately I think you would better offer just getting a tow behind spreader and doing it that way.

I used liquid fert on centipede and it was not my decision. It was a company decision. We used 17-2-5 with micronutrients. The reason I did not like it on centipede is because it would often get tip burn on a hot day. Granular fert is a much better option. I'd try to creat some room to store it.

Thanks for the insight everyone. It sounds like the best approach will be a spreader.

I’d consider dialing back to a single app or all out stopping preemergents if you are looking to get the centipede to fill in better.

I spray 30-0-0 UAN liquid fert on my centipede. But I’m “spoon feeding” .25 lb N monthly sometimes twice a month. I also usually apply with plenty of water via a hose end sprayer.

I'm currently just doing once in the fall and once in the spring. I tried to avoid it due to possibly slowing the centipede but the weed infestation was just too bad. Now that I have the tow-behind sprayer it's much easier to spray consistently so I am hoping to get away from preemergents.

This is the sort of thing that I was curious about. It just seems easy to get wrong which makes me hesitant.
