I like to use April 15th because you are out of the freeze zone and St Aug and centipede should be fairly greened up on their own. Besides the freeze issue both grasses can also develop chlorosis if ferted too early.

With fertilizing grass is it a soil temperature thing? Or just waiting til the lawn is fully green?

More of an activity thing. Many people say wait until your 2nd true cut of the season.

I have bermuda so I scalp, then wait until I have cut twice and hit it with some triple 13. After that I push it with nitrogen for the remainder of the year unless soil tests say otherwise.

Honestly I’ve never seen a recommendation on lawn fertilization based on soil temperture, the main thing is waiting for the lawn to wake up from dormancy and until the new grass roots have regenerated so that that they can best utilize that expensive lawn fertilizer you are putting down for the grass’s benefit.

I like the general recommendation of waiting until you’ve cut the grass twice (and I mean cutting grass, not weeds to tidy up the lawn) before fertilizing, or ronks recommendation of around Tax day - April 15. When you fertilize is not so critical as to when you apply herbicides.

As for me, Baton Rouge, I cut low and bagged the clipping about 2 weeks ago to tidy up the lawn. My grass is now growing enough (centipede) for a first cut - I will try to do that in the next few days. When I cut it the second time, which I anticipate to the the first week of April, and the entire lawn is fully greened up to my satisfaction, then I’ll apply fertilizer, and if I can I’ll try to time the application before a nice soaking rain to water it in.

I did the Sunday last year and my yard looks fantastic now, coming out of winter. Just got my box yesterday and will start in a week.

Thanks all for the replies. Makes sense. I’ve got an itchy trigger finger and fertilizer in the garage. Yard is almost fully greened up now but I’ll hold off til April.

Going along with the St Augustine topic, I have a lot of clumps of tall fescue growing in my St Aug yard. What is the best way to get rid of it?
