It'll get much better as it cuts in, once the edge is deep enough and well established it will pretty much guide itself as fast as you can walk with it. Just remember to flip the blade every so often so you don’t wear a big radius on just one side. Also, look for local shops that sell bulk blades, I got a 10-pack of blades that fit my Stihl for $15. That's about 20 years worth of edger blades for my usage.

I forget that most of you don't have to deal with rock. No way I can go a quarter inch into the edge in some spots, a blade would spark and jump and have all kinds on fun.

I've got old bits of ragged concrete to edge around. Sparks are just part of the fun.
