I moved to this place about 4 years ago. These plants were not there-I checked the pics from the listing. I just started noticing them this year. They are spreading. I actually kinda like them, and my fish seem to too. What is it?

Typha latifolia , cat-o-nine?

They show up in water features, tagging along on Bird's feet etc. A nice addition to any garden pond

Yes, scientific name is correct but common name is cat tail - you were close.

That's interesting to me as there are none of those in the bayou behind the property. Closest looking things are Tx Iris.

Internet search cat tail seedhead - when the seed head, which looks like a corn dog, burst, the seeds can be blown long distances on air currents.

It’s a cosmopolitan aquatic plant found throughout the world. I see what appears to be a bayou behind your yard - I’m sure there is some cat tail in that waterbody somewhere.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. There very well may be-I just haven't seen them.

Thanks for your help.

I have a small patch behind my house, those things float everywhere for a week or two. Hit one w a lawnmower and it looks like a cottonwood is near

Agree with cat tail. Also edible before the seed head turns brown.

Helpful hint. I put some of that from the spillway in my fish pond at my old house. Took over the whole pond in about month. Seemed like it won’t go away after that.
