I just got an interlock installation estimate for $1600. I’m going to run my naturals gas 8000watt generator to power a window unit and lights. Is this reasonable?

Installing a 30 AMP power inlet and a circuit breaker interlock on my panel costed me $430 in August 2020.

This is a 50amp inlet. Labor alone on this estimate is 800. Who did your installation?

I'm in Philadelphia. And the price difference of the inlet, wiring, and breaker can't be these much 30 to 50. Don't know what else to tell you. Took them only a couple hours tops.

A 50 AMP inlet box is only 60-80 bucks. Breaker maybe 25-30. Interlock cheap is 25 or maybe up to 100. Add wiring and 800 bucks for parts doesn't add up.

There’s a lot of variables to the installation/labor cost. Materials *should* be straightforward assuming you have a fairly new box with readily available components. You’ll also need the empty breaker space, or it may involve rearranging other circuits in your panel.

If the panel is on the exterior, it becomes a pretty simple install. If it’s on the interior of the house, it’s a lot more complicated.

it's on the exterior. I looked at some of the materials and I think there's a markup. Interlock kit 350, inlet box 140, 50A breaker 70.

Sounds like they don't need the job.

This is the only thing really marked up. Enough to where maybe you and him are not on the same page as to what you’re asking for.

I had another estimate and it's $100 less. It includes the surge protection system. The inlet is only 30A but it should run most of the house minus central air. I'll probably go with this one.

I had a 50 AMP inlet installed with an interlock. Electrician had to move a breaker to a different spot to make room for an additional 50 AMP breaker. Cost me $450 I think.

Got the work done from J Row Electric in Denham Springs. They were VERY professional, courteous, cleaned up after them selves. I would highly recommend.

I had also got an estimate from Rhino Electric for the same work. They quoted me $1200. You can see why I went with J Row.

I would get it done soon before Hurricane season is upon us.

You don’t consider the $18 50 amp breaker for $70 to be really marked up?

You got it at the right time. Did yours include a surge protection?

No it did not. I didn’t even think about that to be honest.

When they ran the wire from your inlet to your panel, did they cover it or was it exposed?

This is it. Inlet is inside the smaller box to the right and the wires are indeed protected with conduit, if that’s what you mean.

Yeah, I was asking for protection of the wire. It’s nice and close. My inlet will be 20 ft from the breaker panel. My panel is towards the front of the house. The natural gas line is towards the back. Thanks for the pic.
