First time needing to deal with this. Pretty sure the refrigerant leaked out as I'm getting no cold air and the liquid/return lines are nearly the same temperature. Pisses me off as this unit is only 6 years old and i'm already having this kind of problem

What should I expect for replacement quotes these days?

Condenser Coil
Evaporator Coil
Entire Air Handler

It could be as simple as a bad capacitor or contactor/relay.

A trained ear can determine if your compressor kicks on when the outside unit starts. The outside unit starts the fan and compressor at the same time.

If indeed the freon has leaked out, it's most likely the evaporator coil.

I have seen quotes range from $1000 to $3000. Get several quotes.

Evaporator coils are notorious for leaking at around 6 years of age - at least the non-aluminum coils - for all manufacturers. If you bought the unit 6 years ago, and it was properly registered with manufacturer by the installer or you, the coil would be warranted for 10 years. You would be responsible for the labor and refrigerator cost for replacement which probably still be in $1-1.5K range. If you “inherited” the unit then the warranty won’t apply. Posters on this board have mentioned in the $3 K range for coil, refrigerant and labor in the past year or so.

But as stated it could be as simple the compressor side of a dual run capacitor being bad, and as also stated you should be able to determine if the compressor motor is kicking on. If both the compressor motor and the condensor fan motor are working then it would not be the capacitor. If you have a multi-meter with a capacitance setting that is an easy DYI check. Also can be as simple as a loose wire, burned terminal electrical connector at the end of the wire, etc.

Upside, you found out now in mid-Feb as opposed to July.

I recommend giving Matty Ott a call at least let him give you a quote as well. He works for a commercial company but does residential on the side. He has always been able to save me some money and does honest, reputable work. 504-913-3688

i was quoted $5500 for a evaporator coil swap (direct swap, without plenum), 4-5lb of R410A, and a new filter drier right where the liquid line goes into the evaporator

yikes

getting a second quote tomorrow

Sure that's not for the air handler?

nope, you read that right

$4100 for the evaporator swap
$1000 for charging the system
$400 for adding the line filter near the evaporator

this was from a pretty big name around the BR area, but i'm not going to specify

Damn!

What size unit and did either suggest swapping the air handler instead? I can't image the cost would be much more.

i didn't ask and they didn't suggest, i could imagine it would be thousands more since they already want so much for the evap alone

it's a 4 ton unit

Quote I got today was $3400 for swapping the ADP aluminum evap with a Trane aluminum evap with adding a liquid line filter near the evap

Small family owned local company.

Much better. Insane spread in estimates from $5500-$4400-$3400

~$2000 price difference

Good to hear. Those smaller companies have less overhead.

Glad you got more estimates.

Certainly more in line with what others reported for similar non-warranty evap replacements in the past year. Just the cost of R-410A refrigerant is out of sight now that it’s being phased out by EPA.

Often you have to go with smaller firms with lower overhead to get better deals, plus you often have more experienced techs - not uncommon to have the owner in the attic doing the change out.

You can internet search R-410A phaseout but bottom line HVAC manufacturers will be required by EPA to stop manufacture of R-410A systems by Jan 1, 2025.

But the R-410A refrigerant will be available for many years to come, just expensive as R-22 became with its phaseout. I wouldn’t be concerned about it - I replaced my R-22 unit with a R-410A system year ago this month knowing of the phaseout.

You and I will be replacing our 410A systems before 410A refrigerant is no longer available.

R-32 and R-454B will become the new residential HVAC refrigerants used in new equipment and they can’t be used in R-410A equipment.
