How long for septic leach lines to dry out?

Am I good to start digging up decommissioned septic lines 6 months after the fact? I'm not going to stink up the neighborhood, am I?

If the system was healthy, the leach lines shouldn’t actually stink much.
Maybe just expose a small section close to the tank to test.
Make sure your Health Department doesn’t require a permit first.

If the field lines are working correctly, they should contain nothing but maybe a little “dirt”. Curious as to why you are digging them up? They are usually abandoned in place,
