I'm putting in some new windows that are currently blocked by a boxwood hedge. The hedge is old and very large, about 6-7' tall.

I don't want to hurt it by pruning too harshly or pruning in the middle of summer, but don't want to wait until spring. Any advice for how to best go about it??

Those are pretty resilient. I never bothered to not prune at certain times of the year when we had a pair in front of our house. Just shape them up some, and cut them way back when they needed it. If you wanted to you could cut it back to about 3-4 feet tall now and it will fill back in.

Cut it back to what you want. Put some garden fertilizer and that thing will be back in 3 months. Keep watered.
