Gravely pro turn PTO shuts off when hot

Pro turn 52 will cut and then usually when under load after engine is hot the blades will stop and the PTO knob will not engage blades into engine cools down. Have had it into. Lafayette dealership 2-3 times and they either can’t reproduce the problem and find no issues and just changed carbuerator and first cut back it happens again. To me it’s a faulty relay or clutch and not the PTO belt but what do I know.
Any ideas or experience with this?

Try this, test the ohms on the pto clutch cold vs hot. it should be somewhere between 3-5 ohms but check a manual if you have one to make sure. You'll probably see a big spike when hot(after it stopped cutting) if it's bad.

Electrical issues like a faulty clutch or relay are common culprits when a PTO stops working only after the engine heats up.

Are you talking about checking ohms on the clutch switch or on the clutch itself?

You say they changed the carburetor….was the engine shutting down after it gets hot or just the blades?
Did they tell you whether the blade clutch is actually getting power when it shuts down?
I am not quite understanding what is going on.

Twice they claimed they couldn’t recreate the problem and down grew anything wrong. The mower would cut and when hot just start to big down and shut off. Even when not cutting hard. Sometimes if I turned off blade PTO the engine would not stall. Most times it stalled. So this time they kept it over a month and said there was debris in carb and replaced it. Got it back yesterday and it still does same thing. Runs then blades bog down and stall engine. Engine then will start back up but only when choke is in but blade PTO won’t engage blades until sometimes the throttle is at full. Not at 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 throttle. So then I cut for 10 minutes and same thing happens.

UNplug the wire harness going to the pto, test the clutch only. You can test it from the switch plug too, it might be easier. Make sure it only has 2 wires going to the clutch.

That does sound like a fuel problem to me. Have you been running ethanol gasoline in it? If so, it probably has some water in the tank. Drain fuel (dry) and change all filters and screens.
Otherwise, I would say it is vapor locking…..trace the fuel lines out from tank to carb and be sure they are not touching anything hot.

It’s doesn’t stall when it’s just engine running. Only when blades are engaged.
Have not run a drop of ethanol fuel in it
Goes in shop every winter for annual maintenance
Lafayette dealership changed carb, fuel filter and purged lines this last repair attempt. Didn’t work.

Interesting…..sounds like something may be binding up mechanically. Next time it happens, see if you can turn the blade with your hand….with the engine off, of course.

Had a clutch problem with mine. It would mow for about 30 mins and blow a fuse. Put in a new fuse and it would cut for about 15 mins and burn fuse again. Install another fuse and then it would cut maybe 5 mins and burn another fuse. Let it sit a day and do the same all over again. I knew it was a clutch issue, called and suggested that to the dealer that I bought it from. It was under warranty, and when I brought it in they never could replicate the problem, and the clutch was testing ok by their own standards but…they were not using it long enough. They replaced the wiring harness, connectors, switches, etc, etc…. Finally put on a new clutch and never anymore trouble.

The "clutch" on that unit is electromagnetic and it certainly sounds as though the "coil" of the electro-magnet is breaking down under heat load. The coil by itself is not a replacement part. The electromagnetic clutch assembly must be replaced.
It's critical that this be tested at the very time it has failed if you are set on testing prior to replacing component. I was a mechanic from 1980-2020 and electrical was one of my specialties. I'm definitely in the replace magnetic clutch column. Good luck to you!

Now that makes sense to me. Do yo think it’s worth trying to replace the PTO shift switch first given that is a $25 part that I can replace myself? I can check its resistance but not sure I can do it while the failure takes place.

The method of replacing a much less expensive component (mostly due to an inability to reproduce the failure) is sometimes employed in these situations;however, you must understand that said PTO shift switch simply transfers 12v on request-clutch does not ground through switch.
You can try the switch but I believe you're just adding 25.00 to the cost of the clutch assy that you'll eventually purchase. Perhaps you could attempt to source a good used electromagnetic clutch unit if you're looking for an option. I do wish you good luck !

Well do you think the problem could be caused by water and debris in the gas? I noticed yesterday that engine wilk stall also when it’s just running in engine w/o the PTO engaged. The dealership thought that was the problem and replaced carb and filter but did not yank and drain tank. So I did yesterday and there was debris in gas. So I flush it out and back blew the in tank screen and got more debris. All clean now and it ran good yesterday but haven’t tested it good like I will today. Will report back
