Generator question

Newbie generator user here. I shutoff the generator by closing the fuel shut off (had to leave in a hurry and forgot to turn the knob to off).
Turned the generator back on 3 hours later(everything was still plugged it). It cranked on the first pull. After 20 minutes, the generator shutoff and had a slight burnt smell.
Is this from an overload or something more serious? After letting it rest for a few minutes, it’s acting like it might start with more rest.

Nvm. I think it just needed to cool down.

always unplug everything on the generator, start it, and let it run for a little while then plug everything in

Thanks for the advice. A lot of my mistakes have been that I’ve been rushing myself.

Make sure to keep the oil level topped off, many generators now have a low oil shutoff. Also, if your generator doesn't have one, get an hour meter for it. Get one online or at a local lawn equipment dealer, easy to install and will let you know when to change oil.
