Model: 2021 Briggs and Stratton 6500 watt storm responder.

Use: Used once during Ida in 2021 for a few days. Ran great then had an initial issue on startup. Choked it out the box but wouldn’t start. Ended up waiting a couple hours then boom fired right up.

Issue Now: I took it out for the Hurricane this past year, and tuned it up. Changed the oil, drained the gas from 2021. Now I’m trying to crank it up to no avail. Bought some carb cleaner to try to jump it. It fires up after pulling with the carb cleaner, but quickly sputters out. Not sure where to go from here. Been watching some YouTube videos but no luck. Any advice?

Aren't B&S engines notorious for this? I imagine you can swap the carburetor, if cleaning it doesn't work.
I assume your gas line is clear?

I’m not sure? When I initially bought it in 2021 I had issues even then starting it up. Did all the normal checks then, and it never cranked. Came back like five hours later and it fired up. I’m hoping same thing happens now. Maybe the fuel is still moving thru the lines??

Did you leave the fuel in there from the last time you used it?

Here's a vid that should help, Check the cheap fuel lines for a clog and the shutoff valve. You can also pull the plug to see if it's gummed up, clean it. Gummed up plugs means the carb is running too rich. Too much choke will do that too.

You can't trust this cheap fuel we get, always drain it to use in the mower after the event that you need it.

Flush it. Add newer fuel if you can. Clean carb.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Fuel left in the carburetor bowl will plug the jets. Remove bowl and use compressed air to clean jets. Be careful not to lose anything.

If it will run on carb cleaner then it’s not an air or firing issue. IMO.

Look at the bottom of the carb bowl and, if it has a fuel solenoid, unscrew it and clean the plunger so it moves freely.

This is why I find an ethanol free pump and put it in my generators. I pull them out once a month, fire them up, and put a load on them while running for 10 minutes or so. Turn the gas off and let the carb empty and sputter out.
