The instructions will tell you not to keep a freezer in an uncontrolled environment like a garage, but many, including myself, find it quite convenient to keep one there

That's what I am wondering about. I had a flood and had to move my freezer into the garage. After the remodel I would like to keep the freezer in the garage but am worried how it will do in the heat of the summer. Sounds like a lot of people do it so I guess it's not that big of a deal.

You won't regret it. I don't have a deep freezer anymore, but have 3 full-sized refrigerators with freezers. 1 is in the garage for beer, oil for the fryer, etc. and keep the freezer part full of deer meat and sausage.

Yea, 2.
Our chest freezer is where we put the kids junk food. The upright freezer is stores all other food.

Make sure you get a freezer alarm that alerts when the temp goes below a certain temp. I put a freezer full of deer meat in my outdoor shop and it lost power and I never knew until all meat was ruined. Cleaning out a full freezer of rotten meat isn't fun. Check Amazon. Money well spent

My place out in the middle of nowhere I have an upright freezer in the dining area (round/oblong table, freezer in the corner). Stock up when I go to town and when the garden is full plus all the soup stocks I make (if it has bones I boil them into soup stock).

Probably cost Sears more to deliver and haul away old one than this most recent one cost in total.

Only downside is when I was working in DFW and storms rolled through killing the control panel. It was a month later before I was able to get back. Literally smelled the rotten mess before I opened the front door of the house. Lesson here: Buy no-frills version as they are super simple inside and thus ez ez ez to clean. Replaced the control panel for about $85 and works good as new now although it did take major cleaning and about 30-60 days to thoroughly rid of the death/rotting corpse odor.

It is very worth it. If you have the cash, get an upright frost free. We are about to buy our third freezer. It will be in the garage. We have one that was given to us after the flood that is in the spare bedroom/man cave. It's packed out with sauces, stocks , and game. Also, if you start buying those meat sales, get a vacuum sealer. We buy 20 pounds of ground beef at a time and separate it into 20 1 lb bags. Flatten them, seal them, and stack them in the freezer. Takes about 10 minutes in cool water to defrost the bag and use.

frost free

FWIW Frost frees cost more to run in electricity, up to 50% more sometimes. The defrosting can cause some issues with freezer burn and thawing meat during its cycling

I have a fridge/freezer combo at home and the freezer side stays full. We use the fridge for alcohol and drinks for get-togethers.

Also, have a 20 cubic freezer at work that stays full of meat.

Katrina taught too many of us this lesson. If you're gonna be away, then everything in your freezer needs to be inside of a plastic bin or plastic bag. It's a helluva lot easier to pull out skanky bins that caught the defrosted mess than to attempt to clean the drippage out of a freezer. If/when I evac for a hurricane, I double-bag everything in trash bags and put it back in. Should the worst happen, it's easy to pull out the bags and toss.

Mine stays full. Another tid bit that I do. If is going to be up against a wall put a cheap fan on top blowing in the back to dissipate some of the heat from the coils. It helps with the efficiency of the freezer
