After seeing this thread and realizing it's only $30 for some peace of mind that we don't leave and the garage door stay open all day, I picked on up at Lowes yesterday. The problem for me is that the wifi signal is weak. So I guess I'm trying to figure that out today.

Is that causing an issue or are you just worried that the signal looks weak?
The reason I'm asking is there is only the tiniest bit of data exchanged for devices like this.
Basically a 1 or 0 to tell it to close or open and a 1 or 0 when it's polling to get the current state.
Are you having trouble actually getting it to respond consistently?
Eta getting it setup does require a good bit more communication. You might be able to plug it in near your router to get it configured then move it to the garage and see if it works. If it's 2.4 which 99% of these devices are it should get a signal.

Initially it was a problem getting setup. It detected a weak signal and notified me and I couldn't get through the whole setup. Now its offline often. I'll click to close it and it says offline. I think it's just dropping the signal. I'm in a new house and I guess my router just isn't doing the job now. I don't want to go to mesh so may just look for a router upgrade.

just a suggestion; if its showing offline then yep, that's probably not going to improve over time; i had a problem w/ my ring floodlight camera because it was lower than my router (garage was under the main house) and right smack dab next to a metal gutter.
however the little ring booster thingie plugged into an outlet in the living room directly over the garage took care of it in that situation.
another suggestion - where is your router in the new house? before you get everything settled you might try moving it around to different locations and use one of those eleventy billion wifi-signal sniffer apps and walk around the house unless you're stuck next to the cable/fiber modem or something to see if you can get your existing router to do a little better job w/ the signal.
in any case, depending on your house layout i think you might want to just drop a couple hundred bucks on a mesh system and the problem will basically go away forever.

Good thoughts. Actually, I'm not opposed to mesh completely, and my ISP provides an eero and of course you can pay $5 a month for each additional. 1 question is, can I just buy another eero and hook it up as a mesh point instead of paying the $5 a month rental? Secondly, the main reason I unplugged the eero and went back with my router is I have it configured to RDP into my laptop from outside of the house. I'll have to check and see if I can get eero setup.

quote:yep thats rubbish. i think a 3 node eero is like $200 and even cheaper during sales which seem to happen every month.

i wouldn't pay to rent anything; probably have it locked down where you can't do stuff with it as well.
play around with it; if you already have one and you're not payin extra for it, no harm in plugging it in to see if it helps your signal.
i think the eero app also has the 'wifi signal detector' thingie built in so you can walk around the house and see where the signal fades.

for those who purchased to aftermarket GDO's with wifi, do you mind sharing a link from Lowes, Amazon, or wherever. My son lost one of the GD remotes so now we only have 1 which the wife uses.
I gotta come through the front door which is a PIA. Would love to buy the remote compatible easy fix and use my iphone to open the GD. I have 2 Lift Master for the dual garage doors. TIA
