I bought a Tempurpedic 15-20 years ago, so it doesn't have some of the new features. That said, the only time I have ever regretted the purchase is when I have to sleep away from home and my spoiled arse struggles to sleep on any other mattress.
I bought one in 2011 and I always love getting home from a vacation so I can sleep in my bed. It spoils you.

I didn't realize how shittily furniture is made until I started woodworking. Then I realized just how expensive quality wood is.
Same here. Been woodworking for decades and the price of quality hardwood lumber is insane. Then toss in the cost of quality hardware to go with the pieces you are making and it really gets $$$$$.
I've had people see some of the things I've built and they asked me to do the same for them-----until I tell them how much it would cost.

You're right.
Just in woodworking only machines, I have close to $25k just in bug power tools, nice planes, nice router bits, etc.
And then the price of walnut, cherry or maple and it's ridiculous. And that's not even accounting for the price of a good finish like Rubio.
I do pieces for friends at below lumber cost because secretly, I love doing it and I'd do it for free. I have all the shite and I truly enjoy it and it keeps me occupied in my retirement.

Mattress: Must have independently wrapped coils then whatever top cushion you like best. Once you get beyond $600-800 or so for these features, the rest are just a matter of personal taste.
Couch: 100% personal taste. More comfortable often means less durable.
Everything else: Buy used.

matching set
We have a friend that is a very high-end decorator. She has a hard rule of no matching sets for anything in the house other than matching bedside tables. We have stuck to that rule. Looks a lot less cheap.
Go to antique stores in more rural areas and pick up different pieces that vibe well together.
