Any of you deal with this? I panicked and bought a new version of the old model and did not find out it was a common problem until after I paid. I just assumed this was an odd failure of an older(was in the house when I bought it) model.

Assuming its just condensation off of the wires? Could you not put something like a piece of plexiglass in between them to prevent the moisture from contacting the metal?

The cause is from within.

Repair people are putting insulation on the back, and there is some kit for the ice maker. Unfortunately, I am finding this all about after the new purchase. learning as I go.

Is it a French door? My parents had one, same issue, and they had to replace it. It was out of warranty and it didn't really make sense to try to repair.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the area that is rusting is an area with too little insulation and it gets cold, condensates and then rust.

But just a guess.

Could you sand it and then apply a really good rust preventative paint?

Yes. The one I am replacing has a ball of ice attached.

I am going to cover that area on the new one with insulation.

Call frigidaire and they will send you a giant black pad to stick on the back, which will provide insulation and make the sweating stop. Used to be free of charge!
