I have a fountain that occasionally is not running and I am interested in having some type of mosquito control for those times when the water is still. I have dogs that occasionally will drink some of the water during the summer so it would have to be relatively non toxic.

Any ideas? I was thinking of just chlorinating it like pool water

You can buy these mosquito doughnuts thinks that you drop in and they float
They release something that is suppose to kill mosquitos and ok for animals
Lowe’s is where I get them
My dogs drink out of my pool sometimes
So chlorine????
I yell at them cause I figure pool water can not be good

Mosquito dunks on amazon are rated pretty high and are only harmful to mosquitos.

Eta: Same thing as previous poster said.

quote:

Kills Mosquitoes before They’re Old Enough to Bite!
The Mosquito Dunks are one of America’s best selling home owner mosquito control products. A product with BTI, a bacteria toxic only to mosquito larvae, that lasts 30 days and treats 100 square feet of surface water.

Non-toxic to all other wildlife, pets, fish and humans.

Simply apply Mosquito Dunks to any standing water or water garden.

Kills within hours and lasts for 30 days or more.

Highly effective low impact product

Some kind of tablet is probably the easiest solution but if for whatever reason you decide not to go that route, a few guppies from the pet store will eat the larva. Dropped a few in rain barrel and they made short work of it. They will survive extended periods without water flow as long as it’s not a tiny fountain, but they obviously won’t tolerate cold in the winter.

Fish will do the trick if the water is habitable.

Yes, the mosquito donuts mentioned by others and/or mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. You can dip them out just about any small standing water body/ditch in Louisiana.
