Finish for Cypress Mantle

Morning Gents.
We recently found an old piece of sinker cypress that we had cut into a mantle. After sanding and staining, I'm looking for a good finish that will protect the wood. I'm not a huge fan of how Poly pulls out the orange tints of cypress... Any other suggestions?
I've looked at finishing wax (such as Varathane or Johnson's), but have never tried it... Thoughts?

Wax is good. Clear wax won’t change the color much. Prep the back side of the mantle similar to the three sides that will show and test a few things on.

Look at hard wax oils they leave a matte finish you just rub them in with a rag and buff it off with another simple stuff several brands it’s mostly used for flooring

Try tung oil on the backside on a spot, it’s pretty clear and doesn’t tint.
