I’m feeling a constant, steady wind coming down stairs.

I blow out a match at every closed door. No smoke blows. I assume the attic door is the culprit.

Do you just hire a guy to use a thermal cam?

Just get yourself an infra-red (IR) thermometer. You can buy one for about $20 and check all kinds of shite with it.

I own my own high-resolution FLIR thermal camera, but there are now options with reasonable resolution for only a few hundred dollars. Klein TI250 is a good little unit for under $300.

I bought one of those attic door insulator tents. Was about $30 . Easy to install and made a big difference in the summer.

There is always a thermal transfer between floors. Warmer air will follow the ceiling upwards and the cooler air will drop.

Very noticeable if you keep the downstairs warmer than the upstairs. Unless it is closed off, the warmer air will always rise.

Do you have a fireplace going downstairs?

I found cold air coming down my stairwell. The culprit was cold attic air being drawn in through the upstairs bathroom ceiling heater/ventilator.

Closed the door and folded up a bath towel and put it across the bottom of the door.

Problem solved.

Cold air can also come in through recessed can light housing.

Caulked and also sealed inside of cans with metal tape.

The thermal gun will be an eye opener.
