I'm in SELA and have some boxwoods that have started growing a lot over the past couple of weeks. Seems early, but I think I'm going to go ahead and put down fertilizer this weekend. My landscape trees haven't started putting on leaves yet, though. Neither have my hydrangeas. When are you guys going to fertilize your beds?

St. Patrick's Day. That's always close to the frost date in Louisiana

February is good time to fertilize woody shrubs and trees in southern Louisiana, particularly if you are using a controlled release granular fertilizer, even if your deciduous trees and shrubs haven’t leafed out yet.

With controlled release fertilizers the nitrogen component, often urea, is coated with sulfur or a polymer to delay and extend the release of nitrogen over several months, as opposed to quick release vegetable fertilizers (8-8-8, 13-13-13). And I’m not referring to the expensive osmocote products used for container plants.

Might wait a bit longer, March, if fertilizing herbaceous perennial plants (e.g., daylitlies, salvias, etc.).

That's way past the historic last date of frost on the southshore/zone 9B. It's more like Feb 15. This year, things are greening up extra early. Swamp maples have already sent out seeds, and the willows are leafed out. All of the live oaks in my area are shedding leaves...about two full weeks earlier than usual.
