I recently did a MySoil test on my Bermuda lawn (Tif 419), and based on the results, I ordered a recommended fertilizer with an analysis of 7-0-20.

However, my yard was aerated yesterday, and I'm not sure when the fertilizer will arrive. I know it's recommended to fertilize within 48 hours after aerating, so I need to find an alternative fertilizer that I can apply today.

Any recommendations for readily available options as the 7-0-20 fertilizer is not in stores?

Bonus question: Should I pick up the cores after aerating in clay soil, or can I leave them to break down naturally with water and mowing?

There’s not necessarily a time window after aeration to fertilize. It can certainly help the nutrients to penetrate the soil and feed the plants, but I wouldn’t rush to make it work.

What do you have available? You can have some higher N content and be fine. In fact, you probably need to add some heavier N based on those results, but that can be done separate from the K. P and K will hang around much longer than N, so want to make sure you can get the right amount of K without overdoing your N (for that application).

Picking up the cores is at your discretion. Some people like to pick them up because they look bad, but there’s no real detriment to leaving them. They should break down with some rain and mowing.

I left mine and I don't think it will hurt to leave them for the health of the lawn, BUT when I went to cut the grass it looked like the Oklahoma dust bowl. So I stopped and watered it lightly. Turned out to be too much and I ended up with mud caked all over the mower. All that to say, I wish I would have raked them up.

As ME stated you don't have to put so much concern on fertilizing after aerating. That 7% N is too low for 419. I'm not sure why they recommended that. I suggest heading over to a Site One or Ewing Irrigation to see what they have. Don't use ammonium sulfate as your sulfur is already high.

Agreed. The nitrogen content that is suggested is too low. Lesco makes a 30-0-10 fertilizer that I have seen at Lowe's. I definitely recommend a high nitrogen content since bermuda is heavy consumer of nitrogen.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Won’t stress over getting something down right away. And will head over to Ewing or Site one tomorrow.

Gotta figure out what to do with this huge bag of fert that’s gonna get here next week since they don’t do returns apparently.
