Just met with my fence guy who was recommended to me by a couple builders. He mentioned that the treated pine made today was a crap board and not what it used to be years ago. Now, he only uses Cedar or Treated Fir.

The majority of the fence will be 8’ and Cedar is only $ 2.00 LF more than the Treated Fir.

Don’t know much about Treated Fir.

Anyone have any experience with Cedar or Treated Fir?

I would definitely not use pine, it will look like crap and start falling apart in a few years. I built mine a few years ago and used cedar. I stained it with Ready Seal "natural cedar" color and it looks great after several years and no maintenance.

Cedar is the best but it’s expensive as shite right now. Hope it start easing down here in the next couple of months. But it may not.

If you go pine make sure it’s not that Lowe’s crap. Good thick pine fence will last a long time. I always go three runners on 6’ and 4 on 8’. Spend the time and bevel the top of each runner.

I think for a few hundred more, I’m going to use the cedar.

Why do you bevel the top of the runners?

Water tends to sit there and I find it rots the runners. Especially where it meets the post. Small bevel and cost with a wood preservative

I built my cedar fence about five years ago and used ready seal dark walnut and it still looks great.

Just got a quote for a new fence too.
Would you mind sharing the cost per linear foot.
The first estimate was $32 linear foot with destruction and removal of old fence. 8ft high

Was this for cedar?

I'm looking to get around 130' of 6' cedar fencing with a top cap for one side of my yard.

I live in St. Amant and I had 5 quotes last year for 150’ of shadow box cedar fence with a cap and trim on both sides of the fence, they all came out around $39 - $40 per linear foot.
