Have a solar (sit on water top type) one but Thinking for a full blown over the pool edge one either just for non swim months like Oct-Mar or maybe even year round if it can be removed easily.

Our pool is surrounded by trees and there’s constantly tree shite in it. Would a cover also help preserve balance by blocking sunlight?

Any input on use, longevity, and also deployment like reels etc?

I’m in the same situation
I was planning on getting a cheap cover to keep leaves out but didn’t. Every day it’s windy, I have a ton of leaves that fill up the skimmer

I had one installed after my first winter with my pool. The leaves were unbelievable, and I could not keep up. Now I install it around september and leave it on until april. You can cut your pump run time in half because the water stays clean. With no sunlight hitting it will burn much less chlorine. It is a gamechanger. I cant remember the manufacturer of mine but it is just like the Water Warden brand. You can install and remove with one person but it is not something you will do often. It is heavy and takes about 45 minutes. The quality looks really good and I think I can get 10 years out of mine.

My pool is free form in the shape of a kidney bean. I bought a 50% greenhouse shade cloth of the internet for about $250. It blocks 50% of the light. I laid it over the pool and outlined the pool form on the cloth. Then I took the cloth to a trucking tarp company in north Baton Rouge where they sewed a seam and grommets every 18 inches for $125. In October I run a stainless steel cable around my pool and zip tie the cover to the cable. Its tight and works well. Rain goes through but no leaves which we blow off once a week. Been using it 10 years now and probably get another 10 out of it.

A “safety” cover is the best way to go. You can get a very tight mesh to allow water to go through or solid vinyl.

I’m in the pool industry. I don’t sell covers but I’ve never seen a solid vinyl actually installed. It sounds like a good idea but you want water to go through it otherwise you’ve got to pump it off.

With a safety cover a manufacturer will custom make one to die your pool. Anchors are installed in the deck and will pop up as needed to anchor the cover.

These are considered walk on covers so if a child, pet, etc. walks on them they won’t collapse into the pool. This is also helpful so you can walk across the cover with a lead blower to clean it.

I’m not sure where you’re located but it can be difficult to find local companies in LA to do safety covers Vs. Northern states where nearly every pool has one. If you’re in the New Orleans area try Ducky’s for a price. They handle all of the odd stuff for pools that other local places don’t.

Yes, this is the type I have. The kids and dogs can walk right across it and cannot get underneath it. It is perforated so the rain drains through.
