Educate Me On Fruit Trees

Specifically the importance of male and female species. Only females produce fruit, correct? Do I need to have one of each to get a harvest? If I buy a fruit tree is it always going to be a female? Would like to plant an apple, peach, and pear tree along with some muscadine and scupadine/scuppernong plants. Anything special I need to do to make sure they produce?

Some require two (maybe peaches), some only need one (most citrus). I have one apple and it produces. I had a bunch more but the drought smashed me.
Lsu ag’s website is a wonderful resource.

As poochie stated most fruit trees require at least a least one other cultivar (variety) that blooms at the same time to cross pollinate for good fruit production. They are not female and male plants per se. Same is true of blueberries.
Citrus, and a few others, are exceptions.
Chilling hours are also important, number hours of temperature below 45 F. So choose cultivars suitable for your area that meet the required chilling hours for your location.
