I've got a section of my driveway that I'd like to get fixed. Awhile back I posted about a tree root that has basically destroyed that section I would like fixed up.

This might seem like a dumb question, but is it possible to pour concrete directly on top of a tree root of an older established tree? The tree is quite large and if I were to actually cut the root, it would be a couple inches from the trunk and I'm only aware that the closer you cut a root towards the base, the more harmful it is to the tree. I'm guessing that the answer would most likely be no since trees are also living and the concrete pour would either not settle properly or it'll affect the tree root system in some other type of way.

Looks like a sycamore? If you want it done right and to last, cut the tree down and dig out the roots. I you're only going to be there 5 years or so, you can pour over it.

Correct, a sycamore.

Yeah, removing the tree would be great, but it would take out a ton of sun coverage that helps shade the house. I'd rather not pay $5,000 just to cut down this sucker.

With everything, there's permeant fixes (more costly) and short term fixes (less costly and easier), you just have to make the decision on which one you want.

If that's your retirement home, do it right or reroute the driveway (if possible).

100% true.

Just wish there was a realistic way to save the tree.

Pouring concrete on those roots will not kill it. But it will continue to grow and ruin your new concrete pretty quickly.
Possible solution would be to have a cut out of titers new pour and fill the space between it and the tree trunk with limestone. You’ll be able tell drive over it.

I’d try to reroute the driveway further away from it or as mentioned go with a limestone driveway.

I think you can cut the root we did that to a huge poplar and arborist did it to manipulate the way it grew it’s been over a year tree is fine. Find someone at the ag ex or an educated tree guy zip over to the out door board there are a few forestry guys there.
