I definitely have 2 main types of grass. Front yard is solid St. Aug and I like it. Backyard is this mixture of St. Aug and this other type of grass that I have no idea what it is. I don't know what to Google to figure it out. I'd like to get rid of this other grass and have all St. Aug. It is low, dense, thin blades. When I step in it, my foot sinks, yet when I mow it, it can't cut it any lower. I'm probably not making much sense. Any ideas? Thanks

Take a picture

Your location would help as well

Maybe Burmuda if you can’t cut it low

Without seeing a picture I would guess you have torpedo grass. It’s very common and very invasive.

I'm in Metairie, LA. The thin blades are the dominant grass type. You can see the St. Aug trying to come through. I'd like to get rid of the other grass and have all St. Aug if possible.

It looks like a lot of Bermuda with either st Aug or more likely crap grass like dallasgrass.

I'd hit it with MSM and see what it takes out.

MSM wont take out Dallas or crabgrass but it will take out most everything else including bahia. It's safe on all good grasses, so it's my first go to.

Thanks! Let’s say I want to get rid of the Bermuda and have only St. Aug, I would have to re-sod the whole yard? Or is there another way to prevent one type of grass while enhancing another?

Sounds like Bermuda. Torpedo grass tends to look more like st aug, but far more aggressive. The thin blades sound like Bermuda.
Does it greenbup later than st aug? So does Bermuda
Is it in full sun? Bermuda thrives in full sun but is much less robust in shade, also very thin.
In the heat of summer, Bermuda out grows st aug and will gradually take it over. St aug’s edge is: starts earlier in spring, grows later in fall and grows well in shade.

Yes all of that sounds like what I have. I’m guessing the only way to change my grass is to rip it all up, kill it completely by covering it up, and laying new sod down.

Or is there an easier cheaper way to get the Bermuda out and the St Aug in?

Mowing with a higher setting is said to work. It's hard to tell exactly what u have besides Bermuda. Like I said you should drop some MSM and 2 4D on it and see what you end up with.

Torpedo grass and dallasgrass look like st aug. In fact dallasgrass is known as the poor mans st aug. If you're going to resod with st aug. Just kill all of it with roundup and till it up.

Neither looks like st aug. Dallis grass grows in clumps and torpedo grass more closely resembles supersized bermuda.
