My only complaint is the belt hops off the blade engagement pulley from time to time in between disengaging and reengaging the blade. Cant figure how to tighten

Watch this guy...he has your answers, although tightening isn't part of the equation.

He'll show you why the belt is coming off

My BIL has a Cub Cadet. It was cutting like crap, so I pounded his stamped metal deck level, replaced one broken spindle and a new belt.

Those pieces of crap are just MTD trash.

What about the other brands owned by their parent company?

This should be good.

Question:

Did your Dad purchase it from a 'big box' store like Home Depot or Lowes?

The riding mowers purchased at the big box retailers are junk. The wheel spindles, the mower deck, drive train, the frame and pulleys are made of cheap materials.

Next time around, bypass the retailers and go to a dealer and spend a few extra hundred $$$.

The mower deck at the dealers is made with fabricated 1/4" steel and welded together. The decks at the retailers are stamped 12-10 gauge sheet metal.

The pulleys are metal and the bearings are much better quality.
Same with the bearings in the wheel spindles. Tie rod ends...
The transmission has metal gears instead of plastic gears that are in the big box retailers.

Also, you get better service at the dealer. At the retailers, its usually some 3rd party buffoon repair guy that has little experience that may or may not fix the issue.

My brother is going through the same issues with his junky John Deere as your Dad is going through.

I have a cub cadet push mower with a 2007 serial number my dad gave me. Went underwater in 2012 during Issac, drained it and started right up. Sat up in storage for three years with old gas. Little starting fluid and started right up. Only time oil was changed was after it flooded. I can’t kill the thing

Pretty much this. The Deere 300/350 hasn’t changed in 20 years and is still the most solid, comfortable, and advanced that you can buy.
