Does anyone have a countertop ice machine, that makes soft, sonic type ice, that they would like to recommend? I see prices range from $100-$400.

My mother in law has one. Have to be careful with tap water as it will mess it up. Also the cubes aren't very cold, kind of sweating. Maybe some brands are different

Yes they do. My folks have a GE profile that makes nugget ice. They've had it for several years without issue.

Look up the GE Opal. I had one. It broke a couple years later but it was OK. It's $529. Past that you can get "regular ice" for a lot cheaper. But for "sonic-ice" this is the cheapest I have seen and I did a lot of searching a few years ago.

I think you need to filter the water first to get some of the minerals out of the water before you use it. That is probably what caused mine to crap out because I was just using tap water.

i'm dumbfounded by this.

If your tap water is messing it up, then you probably shouldn't be drinking your tap water. Been using my nugget ice maker for a few years now regularly and it still works like it did the first day.

Cubes aren't cold? WHat does that even mean? I probably get what you're trying to say, but man you sound like an idiot saying ice isn't very cold.
Just some advice, you have to let it make about 2-3 batches first before the cubes are ready to be used. The first batch or two is going to be thin ice cubes

I guess I'm speaking specific to whatever model my mother in law has. It has a clear lid. Yes ice can be different temps. I might sound like an idiot but I have a degree in Physics. As far as tap water, if you check recommendations on these like say "Opal" which was mentioned above the recommend distilled.

We recommend using only distilled water in your Opal, if possible.

Thanks for the info! Looking into it. They are listed as "pre-owned," I'm assuming these are returns that have been reconditioned?

I have a GE Opal. Make sure you pay for the warranty, they tend to break but they will send you a check if it does

We bought a relatively inexpensive one that makes bullet ice cubes, mainly to see if we would use it. We use the hell out of it, so intend to upgrade to "Sonic" ice soon and take this one to our camp. We have never used anything but filtered tap water, and have had no issues at all. I will surely buy the warranty on the Opal since we ask a lot of our ice machine!
