We noticed some water damage to our chimney the other day. Water is getting in through the chimney and leaking into attic. A company came out and said two solutions are to redo chimney (stucco) or to take it off the roof and just board it up and lay shingles in its place. We don’t use the fireplace at all and have no desire to keep it. Not really concerned about any potential resale because we will be in this home forever. Has anyone done this before? If so, who did you use in BR? And am I missing anything with this decision to take down instead of rebuild it.

My parents did this recently but in south MS. There really was nothing more involved than tearing it down below the roof line, boarding up the hole (making sure it is adequately reinforced, then roofing over it. They now have a fireplace in their living room that is just for show but they never lit a fire in it anyway.

Did this with a relative not to long ago. Same issue leaking around it. We did it ourselves he had spare shingles from the original roofing job. Can’t tell the chimney was ever there. But the chimney was just a shroud and galvanized pipe type nothing substantial to take down.

On the other hand, your house will need to be sold one day.
