Chimney maintenance

Been in my current house for 3 years, and don’t know if the previous owners ever cleaned the chimney. Was looking for a recommendation on who to call for an inspection/maintenance if necessary. South Baton Rouge area. Also, if there’s an easy way to check myself, but I don’t mind calling a professional. TIA

I think I paid $125 cash for a local BR chimney sweep to come and do mine. We have gas but even still soot will develop just at a lower amount. I doubt the previous owners were concerned about sweeping their chimney prior to selling to you so I would recommend hiring someone to come out and do it for you. If you use real wood I wouldn't think twice about it either.
I want to say Basic Chimney Sweep is who came out to us.

After purchasing my current home I had a company come in and do it.
Since then, I have purchased a piece that attaches to a drill that I use for regular upkeep.

I had my chimney serviced last fall after noticing some loose bricks near the crown. The crew from emersonproservices.com came out, did a sweep, waterproofed the chimney, and sealed cracks I didn’t even see. They were super chill, explained everything in plain terms, and didn’t rush the job. Price was fair too. I’d definitely use them again before winter hits.

Well, I just got bent over a barrel then having paid $350 for this. I got 2 quotes both of which were within the same range. We even have a cast iron stove with metal vent pipe which I assume must be easier to clean...
In any case, I would recommend buying the cleaning piece on Amazon. I've had it done twice and in both cases (2 different companies) the guys have used a tool similar to the below link by attaching it to a drill to knock the soot down. Then used a shop vac to vacuum it out. Overly simple task and I'm not planning to pay for the service again. Neither company got on the roof even though the service stated "inspection included" which is them looking up into the chimney from the fireplace and saying "looks fine"

we have ours cleaned/swept and tuck pointed every year. Cheap insurance for a 50 year old brick fireplace and chimney. It isn’t expensive

I have mine cleaned every couple of years. Just get on yelp and search for “chimney sweep” and you are likely to find several in your area.
I honestly think few people use their fireplace heavily enough to warrant this nowadays…but it makes me feel better to do it, so I do. I wouldn’t attempt to do it myself, as it would be one hell of a mess.
