Let me start by saying I am pretty dumb on these things, so it is that easy. I'll put it in terms my brother put for me. Big metal box that makes noise outside is where it is at. Small metal box on the wall that is connected to it is your disconnect, pull the black thingy out. You're not going to hurt it. I still turn off my thermostat for the hell of it. Big metal box has a panel with about 4 screws on it, take it off. You'll see a small, fat cylinder in there. Read the info on it and do an Amazon search.

Thats a guess. Nothing he posted points that way, but since it is very common, no harm in checking.
He needs to specify, indoor unit blows normal but outside unit no come on.
Then he can place the wife by the outside unit to listen for a click when he turns it on again , after any time delays .
If contactor snaps in, no need to mess with inside unit

My compressor totally died.
I put a large window unit downstairs, and then two more smaller ones downstairs and one small one in my room upstairs. The vacant bedrooms don't have ac but I have a portable one ready to go.
Been like this for a month. I actually like it. The living room is colder than ever.
Just window units look bad to me.
I'm getting a new compressor. Just is going to be at least $4,000 and I was waiting until summer ends.
