We have decided to install cedar T&G on the porch ceilings (~ 1,300 sf) of our new build in St. Augustine. The home is very far inland and therefore saltwater exposure not a concern. Any suggestions for method/materials for finishing? Natural color preservation and minimizing maintenance are obvious goals.

If you’ve got pictures please share! Thanks.

We have cedar beams on our covered porch. Hit them with tung oil once a year. Look great.

nothing says "low maintenance" like lying on your back on top of a scaffold like michaleangelo to oil your ceiling once a year.

Are you talking western cedar? We have ours in cypress t&g in French quarter bead that is sanded smooth. I have hit it with poly a couple of times and just keep it clean.

Here's a link to the post I made in 2023. Didn't use cedar though. I used spruce pine fir tongue and groove from Lowe's and stained it with Sherwin Williams "cedar" deck stain to match my deck. I wanted a more natural look so no sheen.

You may want to look at Shellac. I used Amber Shellac on my mom's living room ceiling and walls where I tore down a pony wall and needed to match the walls/ceiling around it. It dried quickly so I could make several coats in one day. Cleaned up using alcohol. It does have a high gloss.
