Can you recommend which siding options work best? I was planning on new siding in the fall.

How did you know-it-alls get on Hardie?
Also, I understand OP to say his painter caulked along the bottom of the lap horizontally, not the vertical joints.
Know it all here.
Seal the wall to keep out as much moisture as possible. Caulk, Prime and Paint.
Wood or Hardie.
That is my last post.

Nichiha premium plank siding is as good looking of a product as you can find. It will be a while before it’s back on the market. That and Hardie artisan have taken a hit during covid. From a price standpoint about 30% more that standard Hardie lap but you get the profiles of true wood lap siding but half price of Hardie premium product.
Or LP smart side. I haven’t seen it catching on as much as it should. It’s a good product but scares people because of what it’s made of. I have no doubt it’s a solid product and with 16’ lengths less vertical gaps to worry about caulking
