Wife and I recently purchased a home from an elderly gentleman and in the main guest bathroom is one of those walk-in bathtubs for the elderly/disabled. Being that this is the main guest bathroom we want to make it functional by putting in a shower/tub combo. How the hell does one remove this thing and what the hell do I do with it? This model seems to be high end ($5k+) and don't want to just throw it away. Is there some type of resale market for these?

No market for resale. Take a crowbar and hammer to the edges and rip that shite out.

Yeah 5k+ was a guess but I am seeing they can be much more than that. The elderly gentlemen I bought the home from is loaded so I would assume he did not buy a piece of crap. Guess I will just post it for sale on facebook or something for $1,000 and see what happens?

I'd try that, at least. You never know if there's a DIY'er with an elder at home who might want it.

You could always donate it to any elderly/infirm person who could get use out of it.

Not the worst idea at all honestly.

Are they 5ft? 6ft? I have no idea, I'm assuming they are made to replace a standard tub though?

Yeah it is the length of a standard tub.

What about the width of the tub? Unless this Is an exceptionally small (narrow) walkin-in tub and/or your new house has exceptionally wide doorways that tub is not going to be easily removed from the house without cutting it into sections.

My wife has mobility issues and I had one put in last year - tub had to be put in the house by removing a 4 x 4 glass block window in the bathroom and replacing the window at a cost of $1K. Going down hallways and through doors wasn’t possible without structural renovation.

We bought a pretty nice tub, fairly good size, which was $4K, installation was $3K, window replacement $1K - total cost $8K.

I can tell you the jacuzzi tub it replaced, which was removed in one piece through the same window that was removed, had no value at all.

Thanks for the heads up. Tub was 2'8" ish wide when I measured the other day so not super wide. The guy has dementia so I don't think he has any idea how it got in there.

Well perhaps there is a chance you can get it out in one piece.

Just so you will know the place we bought ours from, Luters Supply in Tylertown, MS, has the largest supply and variety of these tubs in the South. If I recall correctly, cheapest ones were about low to mid $2,000. Most expensive in the $5K range (if it had Jucuzzi type water circulation features).

Though I can’t tell you if it has value for resell if you can get it out the house in one piece, it may compared to conventional tubs b/c older people on fixed income who need these tubs might be looking (or their relatives) for a bargain purchase because of their expense. You might even call Luters, its a family owned business, and ask them - very nice people that have been in business for years, check their website for contact info.

My plumber pulled mine out for reuse elsewhere.

It was part of a major remodel. So not sure if he charged to remove or not.

Thanks for the information. I will give them a call as they should have some idea of what I could do with it possibly. I went by the house again last night (not living there yet) and the tub is in excellent condition and seems to have every bell and whistle a tub like this could have. At this point im hoping to just break even getting it out of the home and if I can get anything for it its just lagniappe.

We put one in the MIL apartment when we built our house. It was around $5k from Luters IIRC.
Could you leave it in? Maybe tile the walls and put up a glass wall with door? Not sure how the door on the tub and glass door would interface though.
Ours is built in and sheetrocked down over the edge.

It is our main guest bathroom and only shower in the home besides the master so any guests that stay with us would have to shower in our master. We have a plumber coming look at it tomorrow.
