I've got a beautiful piece of land with a small camp on it on the Bogue Chitto outside of Summit, MS. Looking to do an expansion to accommodate my growing family/friends. Area is in a flood plane and the river definitely rises - curious if anyone has any experience or advice to offer me in these final decision making days before I go full throttle with this plan. Existing and proposed camp both built 10' up off the ground and in the storms of 2016/2017, the water got about 3' - 4' up on the existing cabin.

The only thing I can add is if you are anywhere near the outside of a bend in the river....BULKHEAD. If you don't have one you will lose land and potentially lose your camp. Growing up my grandfather had a camp in Enon on the Bogue Chitto and a little ways up-river a friend of his lost his entire camp to erosion. Over a decade and he never added any bulkhead. Years into it, he dumped a load of old washing machines in the river to try to stop it, but it was to late and only polluted the river and made it dangerous for everyone near there to use it.

Thankfully - my land is on a very straight section of the river. My neighbor up the road is on a huge bend and they just get major floods anytime the river comes up.

design it to withstand a 100 year storm, not just "well this is where it got last time"

I'd rather overdesign it than under design it
