Topsoil is deconstructed forest products. You would want mineral soil. Mineral soil is made of sand, silt, and clay. There isn't a whole lot of organic material in it so it won't decompose.

I have spots with play sand and a spot with top soil. The play sand only filled in much quicker with Bermuda. This could be different for other types of turf I imagine. It seems to absolutely love the sand.

Sorry, I just showed my age. The "top soil" stuff sold bagged now is pretty much just small-size mulch.. At one time top soil was the 1st few inches of dirt stripped from land being leveled for development.

I don't know why, but this seems to be 100% true.

The “only way” is sand but I’m in DFW and have a clay yard that doesn’t take sand well at all so I am composting a couple times per year to get a better loam before I can sand. In the mean time, I just cut low anyway, and when I scalp, I take a rake and beat out the scalped area an inch or so. I have Bermuda so it heals quick. I can mow at 1.5” without really bad scalping now or even lower with the small reel. Not perfect but better every year.

The part of my yard that is bermuda, I scalped pretty good early one Spring, put dirt/sand mix, with nitrogen fert mixed in, covering basically the entire yard, raked it in, then watered it every morning for a week or so. Bermuda popped right through it in no time.

It wasn't 100% perfect, but wayyyyyy better and I can level certain areas as needed now pretty quickly. I'm always finding little low spots and throwing a shovel of the mixture on it and stepping on it to keep it in place.
