Bathtub faucet has recently started leaking while turned off after showers

Started about a week ago to where it would just barely drip and now has turned into a full blown slow stream.
The shower knob is basically this one but with two Phillips head screws on the back:
Does a fix require taking this off or messing with the faucet itself?

What type of valve? Delta? They are known for issues, you can purchase replacement inserts from Amazon, depending on the brand

Cartridge needs replacing. About $40 + watching a how-to-video on the YouTube if you are in any way handy. Easy-Peazy-lemon-squeezy.

Just had to change a cartridge myself two weeks ago.
If it's newer then a couple years then you may have to go to a plumbing supply store to get it as I did because Lowes or Home Depot did not carry the newer version.
(This was for a Pfister shower knob)

Yup, the seals go out and will cause the drip drip drip

That happened to mine and this was the issue. Was doing some renovations at the time and those guys handled it. The guy had a hell of a time getting the old one off. Said he had to really lean on it.
