I had my central AC serviced today. I have a 2,880 sf single story house. I had my unit replaced 10 years ago and it cost $7,500 for a Lennox unit. The technician told me it would be $21,000 to replace that same unit today.

Did you blow them too?
I paid in hundred dollar bills plus he took off $500 they charged me when a tech came out 3 days prior to diagnose an evap coil leak and he refilled it with 4lbs of Freon that ran out in less than 12 hrs which was a waste of money. I can post the receipt if you’d like. I think the initial quote was $9500

Currently have a 3 ton unit in an 1879 sq ft house that is over 20 years old.
Just got quoted $12,800 for a 3.5 ton Carrier heat pump system (currently have just electric heat system). Expanding return air. No duct work. 10 year parts, 2 year labor warranty. I believe he said it's 15SEER but it does not specifically say in the quote.
I was quoted $8,500 on a Goodman 3.5 ton, 14 SEER (no heat pump, no return air increase) a few months ago from a different installer (less reputable installer but installed an A/C for my mother and they have no problems). This guy did not make any mention of needing to increase the return air, which I am most certain is needed.
So a ~4K difference between Carrier/Goodman, with heat pump install vs no heat pump, and increase to return air duct. Larger company with more name recognition vs local owner/installer.
Going to try and get at least another quote or two.
