well here we are not 2 weeks later and its actually my condenser that is leaking and can't be fixed, so we will be putting in a new unit on monday. looks like the best price ive found so far is for a 4 ton unit swap out rheem 14 seer for 4400.

Thats not bad in my opinion. I paid 4700 two years ago for a 14 seer 3 ton unit which was Rheem as well. I have not had any issues out of the unit but I do a lot of preventative maintenance myself monthly.

Is the price just to replace the condenser (outdoor), or does this include a matching evaporator (indoor)? How old was the unit you’re replacing?

Great price. Last summer i was quoted $8,900 for 4-ton Trane single stage 16 Seer but that also included complete replacement of air handler plus gas furnace. I’m not in an emergency situation but my unit is nearing the end of its expected life, and it’s a R-22 unit. I’ve learned since that quote, the quality of the install is more important than the name on the HVAC. Seriously considering Rheem. Haven’t got quotes yet.

I got a 16 seer 5 ton Reem/Ruud this year. So far very pleased.

Can you tell me who did your install? Would you use them again - service and maintenance?

Climate Control/Licensed to Chill did mine. I was satisfied with the install.

Most of the prices in this thread seem high to me.
Most seem low to me unless we are talking about different things. Mine are currently 13 years old and we are looking at replacing them. We have 2. A 3 ton and a 5 ton.
We were quoted right at $20,000 for basic models (2 yr warranty) and $23,000 for deluxe models (10 yr warranty) to replace them both.

Guys just left installing a 4ton 14 seer ruud unit with electric heat. Took 3.5 hour and paid 4600 cash. 10 year parts warranty, 2 year labor warranty.

There is a steep jump in price in equipment between single stage, 14 seer HVAC (basic) vs 18 to 21 seer variable capacity HVAC (deluxe) depending on manufacturer. I mentioned $8,900 quoted for a 16 seer single speed 4-ton Trane, but the quote for a 4 ton 18 seer variable (speed) capacity Trane was $14,300. My unit is 12 years old.
I’ll definitely get more quotes from other HVAC companies that carry different brands based on comments from this thread and other threads on HVAC replacement.

I’m no sold on the higher seers being worth the money. These damn things only last 10-12 years anymore without significant repairs so if you factor the price difference between just 14 and 16 your about 1200-1500 dollars more for the 16 seer and it may take you 10 years of electric “savings” to make that money back hell by then you might have to buy a new coil or compressor and there goes your savings.

Very good point and I tend agree from everything I’ve read. . Given the higher cost of the higher seer multistage units, the break even point to recoup the higher initial cost through reduced energy bills is about equal to expected life of the unit.
Therefore, the general thought is that purchasing the higher seer multistage units should be based on home comfort factors rather than long term energy savings that might or might not materialize. Home comfort meaning the higher seer multistage HVAC runs longer at lower speeds and thus you have more stable temperatures and less swings in humidity in your home, as well as a quieter unit, compared to the traditional single stage lower seer system.
