Armyworms are taking over lawns in my area (including my neighbors and soon to be mine) and the stores are sold out of all the recommended pesticides. My local feed and seed has a few bottles of Malathion 55% which the workers said was the only thing they had in stock that would kill armyworms. Notably, armyworms aren’t listed on the label and it says it’s not recommended for land).

Questions:

1. Will this kill armyworms?
2. Can I use it on my lawn?
3. Should I alter the mixture ratio?
4. Should I mow before application?
5. Should I apply at night when armyworms tend to be active?

Thanks for any help.

Anderson’s Duocide, if it's the larvae you have an issue with that are actively eating your lawn and not the moths. I get it on Amazon and just keep a bag around, and when they start feeding on the blades, this goes out at night and kills them overnight for negligible lawn damage and full recovery.

If worms are already present, do I have 3 days to wait to have something delivered? I’ve been led to believe my yard could be substantially damaged by then.

Probably not but wouldn't be a bad idea to get something to have ready.

I don't know anything about the subject chemical. There's another thread on the first page about 10 posts down that has other solutions as well.

All I can tell youi is malathion and Sevin (carbaryl) were labeled for and widely used to control armyworms in pastures and agricultural crops like rice some years ago but have been replaced by better, more effective insecticides. 57% malathion for crops would be applied at 1 qt per acre. Might be the local feed and seed has Sevin and the person wasn’t aware it controls armyworms.

I can’t answer your other questions with certainty - if it would a violation of label for lawn use, if the distillates in the Hi Yield Malathion would damage grass, etc. but send an email inquiry to Dr. Ron Strahan, turfgrass extension specialist, LSU AgCenter rstrahan@agcenter.lsu.edu. No doubt he’s fielding many armyworms questions now - be sure he’s aware you are having trouble finding the “good stuff” - bifenthrin, etc.
