At one point I had 6 Buff Orpingtons. They gave me and the family more eggs than we could eat.

If you have the room just build a 12' long by 4' wide coop, make it to where you can get to the eggs boxes from the outside.

I found it better to buy more mature hens. It cost more to feed them out to laying hens.

Make an automatic waterer, it's a bug time saver.

Feed them table scraps, along with feed.

I miss my chickens, if I ever get a bigger piece of property I'll get more among with a goat or 2.

I have 4 that just started laying a couple weeks ago. Keep them in run until afternoon or you’ll find a clutch of eggs somewhere in the yard. Make sure you keep predators away, everything likes chickens. I’ve had them killed by neighbors dog, possums, coons and hawks. Just got down with a month long rehab of hen that huge gash between abdomen and thigh. Make sure they are closed up at night. They are hell on a garden and love raised beds. You’ll need to fence them off if you let them free range in yard unsupervised. I enjoy having them and the eggs are much better than the ones you buy. They make great gumbo too.

LOL! They aren't dogs!

I made a feeder out of a rubbermaid tote and some 4 inch PVC elbows. My waterer is a Lowes 5 gallon bucket with cups that are gravity valve activated. We go on vacation/trips a lot and NO ONE takes care of the chickens. Food, water, shelter.

That's what I have. Got a straight run of 10 from Tractor Supply, only ended up with 2 hens. Thought another was a hen, but WRONG! Gave away all the rooster except one, so now I have two. I will probably keep both and just get a few more hens.

I can't tell you just how much we enjoy them. One rooster, while tempermental at times, likes to be petted. He would rather be with people than the other chickens. When I go out to the run, he bounces around like a dog that is happy to see you after you've been gone a little while.

I've never had chickens before, so I was really surprised at how much we ended up having them.

Google chicken egg color chart..

My son has some that produce blue,greenish,tan/reddish eggs and the chickens themselves look interesting..
A fun hobby...

He ordered them online I think and they were shipped to him as chicks....

Animals, regardless of what type, should be checked on regularly. Even if you have everything automated. Things can and do go wrong. Cattle can be in a pasture with plenty of grass and water, but I don’t know many farmers that don’t check on them every day.

I did a insurance inspection months ago. Found the owner at his "Barnyard" We talked for quite a while. He had problems with snakes, coons, hawks and eagles until he took the advice of a neighbor and brought one bird into his coop. A Big Tom Turkey. Snakes gone, Hawks and eagles left, coons disappeared. He laughed and said "That sucker kills everything but Chickens!"

I told him "About two months ago, I did another inspection and went to the wrong house on the property. Called the owner to verify which house I was to inspect. Had another road to go down to the new house. All of the sudden he hears me, You SOB!" Home owner laughs ...."never turn your back on a Tom Turkey. Tried to spur you didn't he?" "I've dealt with them at Auburn in livestock judging' He finished the sentence "And never turned your back on one did you?"
