no I put herbs in whole (on the stems), makes it much easier to remove the stems after drying. For roots (ginger, turmeric, etc) I cut them into slices. For fruits (peppers, calyxes, etc) I slice them in half

the machine is expensive no doubt but the convenience and quality outcome is worth it to me. I would not swap it back for the cash at this point I like it too much
