Friend of mine's mom bought a house from Truland in Gulf Shores. The mold was on the punch list. I wouldn't have closed on the house myself but it is what it is. Took Truland five weeks to respond and an industrial hygenist was hired by Truland who said the bathroom has to be dismantled, the mold removed/contained, and then put back together. Truland said they aren't paying for her to live somewhere else while all this is done. My question is, based on the mold assessment, how dangerous is this stuff and should she move out on a precautionary basis.

Depending on type of mold and severity it ranges from not really serious unless you have respiratory issues such as CF to extremely dangerous.

Sounds like there was a slow leak in the bathroom. Mold is at its worse when it is being disturbed, but if a mitigation company is doing the work they will put up containment chambers.

In the gulf south, there is mold spores in the air all the time, mold only grown at specific locations where favorable conditions can grow. If you take a towel, get it soaking wet and hang it on a hook, you don’t get mold. Do the same and throw that towel in a closet in a ball and mold will grow, but it will only grow where the moisture, temp and food is conductive for that growth to happen

I have a very long story about mold. We had a water leak in a rental house that was reported but never corrected. Didn't think too much about it until our son was diagnosed with a severe hearing loss, he was 6 at the time, that was determined to be environmental not physical. My wife, an RN, had our home tested, and it was found to contain mold, Black Mold, from the water leak.

We moved out immediately. The tests later revealed we had mold on everything we owned, furniture, electronics, college text books, clothing........everything. We ended up throwing everything we owned away because cleaning would have only given us a slim chance of removal of all mold and it would have eaten up our entire insurance policy.

We trashed $200k of "stuff", our entire accumulated home furnishings and possessions. Bought a house and moved in with nothing but the clothes on our back. Our children 18 years later still suffer from severe mold allergies and immune deficiencies.

Mold, black mold is as bad as they say and based on my family, much worse.

Tell her to get a lawyer. This could be big trouble for a long time. If the builder won’t cover her expenses use it to get the hell out of the contact. It will not get better.
