i'm needing to add "something" around a few windows. wood shutters have gotten too expensive: $17-$20/sf. the windows all have a nice fan and keystone on the top. ideas? i'll hang up and listen - tia

Not sure this is any cheaper, but I like window overhangs or awnings, if that's the correct terms.
Certainly depends on the style of your house but I plan to do something like this next time I build.

bahama-style is nice, but they are the same $/sf as traditional shutters

Might want to rethink that unless it's reclaimed old cypress. The stuff you get now just doesn't hold up. I can almost guarantee they will warp and twist just like pressure treated when the summer sun hits them, especially if painted a dark color.
If building your own, do it with Spanish Cedar.

Fair I just know it’s plentiful down there and I have had good luck with it what’s Spanish cedar run per bd ft?

Haven't priced it in ages, but when I last bought some, it was considerably higher than cypress.
But it's got a very straight, tight grain pattern and is very stable material for doors, shutters, etc.
