Adding solar panels to your Roof

I live in Minden, LA which has very high energy costs due to a terrible contract that the city signed with SWEPCO.
Has anyone added solar panels to their roof to decrease the energy costs? If so, how much was it per sq ft and how much does it save you per month?

Probably better off asking the Home and garden board
Will get a few 350 posts and a bunch of nonsense here

Buy the system out right. Don’t do a solar power purchase agreement.
Shop around.
What type of roof do you have? Shade? Azimuth?

Probably makes more sense to get estimates from companies, especially since the pandemic and shutdown might have affected costs.
Historically it takes 10-15 years for panels to pay for themselves. You also have to find out whether you're allowed to go off the grid and if not, what the minimum monthly bill is. Some places will pay you if your net usage is negative and others will zero out your bill, but there are also places where there's a base charge just for being connected.

It was a bitch for my cousin to reshingle his roof because of the solar panels.
10-15 year payoff sounds right.

The panels wear out, i don’trhink they usually tell you that. Plus not attractive. I have not had them , but i can tell tou this.. i have bid on removing them from federal housing units that had them installed and wanted them gone 10 years later.

I can make you a deal on a small nuclear reactor. Nuclear power - too cheap to meter.

Why would Minden agree to make their citizens pay more for electricity?
How much per kwh are we talking?

I used to work for one of the largest solar companies in the US. It’s very dependent on your specific house and energy needs. How many trees do you have near the roof? Azimuth of the roof line? Offset depends on a lot like what you can squeeze on the roof or on a ground mount and which direction it’ll point and how it will be shaded not just through a day but throughout the year. Cost varies alot by area but figure at least 2.30 a watt.

It is true they degrade but most people don’t understand how or how fast. Light induced degradation usually hits 1ish percent the first year then .3ish for ever year after. Notice that that’s percentage degrade of previous not from nameplate. Also, any one with 3 brain cells has this built into their model and not only discloses the 20 or 25 year production values but also sizes systems appropriately with this in mind. NREL has simple modeling they can use or if you go with one of the majors they have propriatery engines that are way better.

But a solar company will sell you a system and put it on a shitty roof.

The time to get in done past.....subsidies are now much less and ROI is way up. Unless the technology is much better than 10 years ago, it might not be worth the hassle.

Yeah it’s been moving fast. It’s not even close to compare something from 10 years ago. And the ITC is only scheduled step down like 4% this year and it may end up getting extended.

Ive looked into them (louisiana) and breakeven is usually 15 years give or take. There is fed tax credit but also a rural credit if you qualify... might get it down to 12 year payback. Look up usda reap. They should last 30+ years.
All in all, a decent but conservative long term investment from financial perspective. Would be really nice to have in retirement to stretch fixed income.

Wow. You're getting fleeced. Nothing like a local podunk government to watch out for you.

Yeah that’s the only reason I’m really looking into it. My bill last month was $485. We keep it in 76 during the day and 72 at night
