Weed eater got wrapped around a young loquat tree, about 1" trunk. All bark is gone. Is there anything I can do to help ensure it survives?

If the tree is completely girdled, 360 degrees, with all bark gone in a single location which I think you are describing, really nothing you can effectively do - replace the tree, loquats are cheap and grow fast. In theory there is a technique called bridge grafting but not worth the time and effort.

Horticultural extension specialists say weed-eating is top cause of death in young trees in the urban landscape.

I know you’ll be careful in the future but here is an brief article worth reading. LINK

FWIW, 3 years ago I planted a nice size 15 gallon loquat (7+ feet tall, $50) I bought in Forest Hills. A few months later I bought small 3 gallon loquat (3-4 ft tall, $20) from a Southside Produce vegetable stand and planted it 20 feet away from the larger loquat. Today, both trees are the same size (10-12 feet tall) and I harvested a ton of fruit from both trees to make jam this past spring.

I have hundreds of sprouted loquats under my trees. Been digging them up and giving them away to friends and neighbors. They stay small under the shade but as soon as they are re potted they shoot up

the tree I started with (from a seed) is bionic, super heavy bearer and it seems like every seed sprouts. I know the books and whatnot say to start with a cultivar, but if you know of a tree that’s a good bearer, start with a couple of seeds from that tree

That's a good article. Thanks. I had sprayed all the grass back from the base to try to avoid this. Seems I'll have to spray it back further next time. It's not always me trimming the yard

Have you tried painting the damaged area with pruning paint?
