$189/ year is $1890 for 10 years. Unless you live on the actual gulf as in within 100 ft that’ll never be worth it on average.

You get the 10 year parts no matter what, so basically all you are doing is paying them to stop in and do a 15-30 min service and they will warranty the parts…maybe.

I wouldn’t trust them honestly. But it’s not a terrible amount so if it makes you sleep better there’s really nothing wrong with it.

Would you change the oil in a vehicle that was still under warranty?

I also had a new system installed 2 months ago with a 10- year labor warranty, and I asked the sales rep that specific question, and the answer was yes
I have been thinking all of this time you were an AC tech by trade

I called a “local” company, Surgi’s, when they were advertising an $89/unit maintenance charge. I would have never thought my two 7 year old Trane units could have so many problems. I knew they would try to upsell me, but never thought it would be as blatant as it was.

The tech checked amperage and suggested that it was pulling a little more than it should, so my capacitor was likely going bad. I let him finish his spiel that included needing 3 or 4 lbs of freeon. I then reminded him that I had variable speed units with no capacitors. He claimed that he mis-spoke.

I had a buddy (who used to actually work for that same company, and now does HVAC on the side as opposed to full time) come by to put a second set of eyes on it. He actually put gauges on it, and of course the freeon was exactly where it should have been with no other major issues.

He explained to me that alot of these “local” companies get bought out; this particular one by a larger company in Ball, LA. The techs are then pressured to become salesmen with the goal of upselling a million dollars in products and services a year. They of course do get a small percentage of everything they sell, including service plans. I’d like to have hope that HVAC guys aren’t going the way of car salesman and real estate agents, but I fear they are.

A good friend of mine passed away, before his death, he bought a A/C policy, so much a month. They come out and service, check things, etc. His wife calls one day, said her A/C is fixing to go out. Well that’s what the A/C guy told her. I said, they work or they don’t. I sent my A/C guy over there, he serviced everything. That’s been 4 years ago. One my friend serviced it, I told her drop that policy/insurance, you don’t need that.

She did get a price on new unit, I told her I could do it for half, before hearing her quote, I then told her after she gave me the quote, I could do it for a third. I knew the company, them no good for nothings.
