bapple - I recently ordered an Emerson Sure Switch contactor to replace my “traditional” magnetic contactor but haven’t haven’t installed it yet

You’ll be amazed how quiet it is, especially paired with the MicroAir.

My Micro-Air soft start failed this past Friday - a month after install and Micro-Air is sending me a replacement.

Sorry to hear it but glad they’re sending a replacement. I have one that has been operational for 3 years (over 30k starts) and another one that was replaced after 7 months. When the other one stopped working the soft starter essentially bypassed and everything turned on at once like it did before the starter. Not sure if it’s supposed to remove itself out of the circuit upon failure but mine did. Luckily MicroAir sent a replacement in 2 days and it’s still going strong. I’m glad they stand behind their products.

What did yours do when it failed? Did the compressor fail to start completely or did it act like the soft starter wasn’t there?

Yes the compressor failed to start - I used their app to send the error report, tech got back quickly saying I had faulty soft-start or wiring error and requested photos which I sent, and before the end of the work day they contacted me saying a new soft start was being sent. I was impressed as this was all on Friday afternoon Labor Day weekend. Anyway, I had to restore the condensing unit wiring to its original configuration to have AC - no big deal.

It’s nice that the soft starter isn’t a requirement to get it to start and the unit can run starting across the line. With an inverter-based compressor you’d be dead in the water.

Just checked the soft starter I replaced - it has 23k starts. So I think you’ll get an operational replacement and be good to go.

My Trane compressor has gone out 3 times. The last time he suggested I buy a surge protector from them for like $300 (which is robbery). I told him that I was on the plan and if they wanted to curb their replacement of compressors for no cost to me then maybe THEY would want to invest in a surge protector. He gave a call to his boss and installed one after seeing the light.

Hasn't gone out since then. However I have lost my dishwasher and a few microwaves as well. Since then, I have installed a whole home circuit breaker type 220 surge protector. Hopefully that's what it was.
